Royal Oak Farm is the premiere producer of high quality composts, topsoils and specialty soils in Virginia. The process of making high-quality soil blends starts with the composting process. For nine years now, Royal Oak Farm has been a major producer of composts derived from agricultural materials, animal manures, short paper fiber, food processing residuals and woody wastes. No biosolids or mixed solid wastes are used to make our compost.
Compost production is overseen by composting and horticultural professionals with over 75 combined years of experience. Blueblood™ compost is carefully aged for many months to ensure its maturity and its value to our soil blends. Our compost improves the physical structure of soil by breaking up tilth, improves the chemical character of soil by increasing Cation Exchange Capacity and organic nutrient levels and improves the biological health of soil by introducing beneficial microbes.

The BluebloodTM Landscape Product Line
Blueblood™ composts are produced under the strict requirements of the U.S. Composting Council’s (USCC) Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program. Full laboratory analytical results are available here. While we don’t offer a “Guaranteed Analysis”, a recent test of our compost indicated it contains about 1.1% N, 1.2% P and 1.9% K. It is very stable and mature, very low in soluble salts and has a pH of between 7 and 8. It is also a good source of plant micronutrients. Maturity is tested by germinating sensitive plant species in comparative trays of compost and commercial potting soil. Blueblood™ compost routinely matches the germination rates and vigor of commercial products.
Blueblood™ enriched topsoil is a carefully blended and screened mix of compost and native soil or similar materials. Blueblood™ topsoil has high levels of organic matter (> 5%), medium Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) values (> 14) and is a good source of both macro– and micro-nutrients. Rain Garden Substrate
Blueblood™ Rain Garden Substrate is an excellent growing medium for plants in small rain gardens, bioswales or in larger bioretention basins. Made with the same exacting care as our Topsoils, Rain Garden Mix is a sandy loam soil with good organic matter (> 4%), good CEC values (> 30), and a complete set of nutrients. The mix of quarried sand and compost results in a substrate with good drainage and permeability and low levels of water-soluble phosphorus (< 5 ppm). Turf Rootzone Mix
Blueblood™ Turf Rootzone Mix makes a superior soil blend suitable for use as a sports turf growing media. Our Turf Rootzone Mix can be used for golf course putting greens, athletic fields or anywhere where good turfgrass growth is desired. Compost-amended turfgrass media has been shown to reduce fertilizer and fungicide costs. Turf Rootzone Mix is made of 80-90% mined silica sand and 10-20% compost and has been tested by Tifton Physical Soil Testing Laboratory, which participates in the United States Golf Association (USGA) Proficiency Testing Program. They noted that Blueblood™ Turf Rootzone Mix met USGA recommendations for a putting green rootzone mixture (greensmix). Full laboratory analytical results are available here.
Blueblood™ Container Mix is the perfect growing medium for potted plants! Made of 50% mined silica sand, 20% peanut hulls, and 30% compost, our Container Mix has low conductivity, high CEC, and the nutrient levels can save you money on inorganic fertilizers. Blueblood™ Infielders Blend is 50% mined silica sand and 50% clean sandy clay loam subsoil that has been screened to 1/2” particle size for improved playability and optimum drainage. A recent soil texture analysis of a sample of Infielders Blend was: 76% sand, 14% silt and 10% clay with a Sandy Loam designation. Full laboratory analytical results are available here.
Erosion Control Media
Blueblood™ compost can be used as a compost blanket on disturbed lands to prevent erosion from occurring, or you can use Blueblood™ unscreened compost as a sediment filtration media in filter berms or in Filtrexx™ filter socks. Compost blankets greatly reduce the amount of runoff and displaced sediment from bare earth and compost filtration systems are far more effective than silt fencing for sediment capture. Poultry Litter Fertilizer
Poultry litter is a valuable organic source of plant nutrients and is a soil amendment that can improve soil quality. Poultry litter consists mainly of poulty manure and bedding material (for example, pine shavings or peanut hulls). It is a source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as a source of calcium, magnesium, sulfur and other micronutrients. According to researchers at Virginia Tech, poultry manure can provide between 21 and 42 pounds of nitrogen per ton of manure, depending on the type of bird and whether the manure is broadcast on the field or incorporated into the soil. The organic matter in poultry manure has a positive effect on soil structure, tilth, water-holding capacity, aeration, pH buffering, cation exchange capacity and microbial activity. Royal Oak Farm has been providing poultry litter to farmers as a fertilizer material for years and is very experienced in complying with all applicable regulations of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
Corn Gluten Lawn Herbicide
For those interested in an organic, natural approach to weed control for their lawns, Royal Oak Farm offers a corn gluten meal lawn herbicide. Corn gluten meal is a by-product of corn processing used to make corn starch and corn syrup, and this meal is carried by Royal Oak Farm as part of its Blueblood™ Animal Fodders product line. Applied to lawns with a spreader, corn gluten meal prevents sprouting seeds from developing normal roots. This does not kill the weed seeds directly, but does make them susceptible to dehydration if the soil gets dry. The developing roots of a number of common weeds are affected by corn gluten meal: crabgrass, creeping bentgrass, smart weed, dandelions, purslane, lambsquarter, foxtail, barnyard grass and Bermuda grass. Corn gluten meal is most often used for crabgrass control, and research at Iowa State University showed that applying corn gluten meal at 20 lbs per 1,000 square feet of lawn reduced crabgrass by about 60%.
